The pH of urine (alkalinity and acidity of urine)

The ph of urine can be determined during a urine test and this particular urine test can also be performed at home. A variation of the pH value of your urine can indicate certain health conditions, which may warrant further investigation.

ph in urine

Normal pH range in urine

  • 0 - 7 acid

  • 7 neutral

  • 7 - 14 alkaline

pH Measuring range

  • pH 5 - 8.5

pH levels in urine

  • This test indicates the acid or alkaline content of urine.

  • The concentration of hydrogen ions are measured.

Abnormal pH values may indicative of

  • Persistent alkaline urine (pH 7 - 8)

    • suggests urinary tract infection

    • vegetarian diet

    • alkalosis

    • pyloric stenosis / obstruction

    • vomiting

    • alkalizing drugs

  • Persistent acid urine (pH 5 - 7)

    • gout

    • fever

    • phenacetin intake

    • predisposition to uric acid calculi (kidney stones)

Further action required if low or high pH values are found in urine

Our pH urine test strip

  • The test is based on a double indicator principle which gives a broad range of colors covering the entire urinary pH range.

  • With an increase in urinary pH, the indicators bromothymol blue and methyl red, changes from orange to green and blue.

  • Detection range: pH 5 - 9.0

  • Active reagent: bromothymol blue (6,0% w/w); methyl red (3,0% w/w).

How you benefit from our test strips

Our very affordable 10-in-1 test strips will check your urine for the pH, glucose, ketones, protein, blood, nitrite, bilirubin, leucocytes as well as specific gravity. To view our test kit, and to purchase this very affordable test strips, please click here.
